Sports divided along class lines- some sports associated with upper class and some with lower class. Soccer, boxing for poorer classes and cricket and rugby and hockey for the upper class (these were the sports associated with boarding schools as well) The sports builds character idea- through sports, boys can learn some moral virtues such as teamwork, discipline, etc. and the idea was that sports build character. 1400s *golfe played and originated in scotland- golfe was so popular, they banned it in preparation for war because too many people were playing the game and not training and practicing archery for war. 1700s *st andrews royal and ancient golf club (1754)- the unofficial center of golf. At this time golfers were using handmade golf clubs with metal heads.
