ISDS 2001 Chapter : CHAPTER 1
Document Summary
K population- never drops low and stays in the carrying capacity . K selected species are low biotic potential and the population depleted. R selected species tend to always be in the exponential growth sage. See table 4-2 on what limits the size of populations. Commensalism- one benefits and the other doesn"t care. Resource partitioning, character displacement- when two similar species live in the same place and avoid competing with one another. Swallows feed during day, and bats feed at night. Competitive exclusion- one species is winner and the other species is the winner in another area. Yellowstone fires- ecosystem designed to deal with this (the disasters). Producers (self-feeders)- capture energy from the sun or from chemical reactions to convert. Primary production- production of organic matter through photosynthesis and growth of producers. Secondary consumers- carnivores prey ate herbivores and other animals. Dead plant material, fecal wastes, dead body structure. Most energy in the ecosystem goes through this food web.
