Document Summary

Citizens of thebes, i am here on behalf of the defense of antigone, daughter of oedipus. She has been wrongly persecuted for a crime that is not as serious as it is made out to be. Not that she did not commit a crime, because she did, but because it was a crime committed out of love for a sibling. This love for a sibling should be seen as an example to all. This love for a sibling is even supported by the gods. Creon"s edict treated eteocles like a king, and polynices like a murderer. Eteocles did not give up the throne when his time was up, and he sent polynices into a horrible exile. Both of the two brothers were both equally in the wrong. Antigone was only standing up for what she believed in. She lost someone who she could never replace, her own brother.
