Document Summary

The war of 1812 & the era of good feelings. Started a new era: single-party rule: feds were blamed for prolonging the war, only rep party, nation is united behind them feds are out, 1816: james monroe was elected pres, does 2 terms also. Judicial nationalism: power of fed gov increases tremendously, court is still dominated by john marshall, federalist. Issued numbers of rulings that affect influence of fed gov: mccoullouch v. maryland (1819): const could be interpreted to giving broad powers", gibbons v. ogden (1824): gave congress authority to regulate interstate commerce over states more. In spite of death of fed party, marshall"s ruling is instilling fed ideals to live on after party power to fed goc. Southern elite isn"t happy bc they assume slavery would then die out: though northerners would try to eliminate slavery as a whole in am.
