There were lots of nominees for president for this election. 1860 election: only one national institution is left: republican party, lincoln had been on the lecture circuit since his senate loss. Stephen douglass had most votes, delegates, and he wanted to be president upset southerners too much to gain much support from the party at large. Buchanan wanted out of the presidency, and no one really wanted him either. Northern democrats wanted to run on popular sovereignty; southern. Democrats wanted a pro-slavery platform including positive reinforcement of the expansion of slavery some southern delegations just left after they realized they wouldn"t be getting this, so dem. party split and effectively collapsed because of it. Douglass for northern democrats, breckenridge for southern democrats: constitutional union party formed. Many were whigs, nominated bell, who voted against the missouri. John bell advocated typical southern whig behavior, shutting up about slavery.
