Harsh conditions 14- 18 hour shifts (6- 7 days a week) Productivity goes up and real wages rise by the late 1800s. Limits on child labor (children alone cheaper to employ the men) Owners fear political instability and grant pay raises. Women and children are prominent in the first years. Working class are people who go to favorite and receive a wage and then go home. West slowly becomes very wealthy in the 19 century.
