European life in the 1500s was extremely difficult to survive in. The church could not provide hope due to its mass corruption, so many people wanted to reform the church back to how it used to be. This is referred to as the reformation, it was a revolution sparking great change by shaking the very foundations upon which european life was built and establishing two major religions that still remain today. Luther was born in 1483 in the city of saxony. In the fall of 1505 he became a monk. Indulgences were something sold by the church as a way to get salvation. Albrecht of bradenburg bought his way into the church through barrowing money. In order to pay his debt he was granted permission to sell indulgences in germany. German princes that didn"t want indulgences sold in their land could forbid it.
