Document Summary

Industrial revolution and the west"s great divergence: 1760-1850 : review from previous chapter. The u. s. is rapidly expanding: which is a key part of the west, because it meant cheap land. Serfdom is on the decline everywhere now: introduction. There is no clear date for the beginning. It is still going on today (it"s changing and adapting: china"s experiencing it now. This was the biggest event since agriculture in neolithic revolution (8000 b. c. ) It has touched every aspect of our lives. By 1800, the west is no longer backwards like in 1500. West can"t dominate china and africa, because they are equal. Proto-industrialization is not industrialization because it is fueled by human labor: like with the increase of cotton brought from the american colonies, people on the countryside made shirts, pants, etc. which increased the textile business. For industrialization to take place you need fossil fuels for energy.
