Document Summary

Feudalism is a combination of two germanic practices: vassalage, manorialism. If a lord"s daughter got married, he contributed to the wedding. If the lord"s son was knighted, he contributed to the purchase of armor. If the lord was taken prisoner, the vassal had to pay ransom: lord. Lord had less expensive/complicated obligations to the vassal: protection. If attacked, the lord is required to protect the vassal. Led to the establishment and growth of the local state: particularly in areas where feudalism was fully developed, many levels of feudal relationships. In those areas, powerful kings eventually emerged: france and england in particular, kings would essentially use existing feudal networks to found a kingdom, on that foundation, they would build a more centralized political power. Wasn"t holy, wasn"t roman, wasn"t really an empire: basically looking at a state that is essentially the old east frankish kingdom, germany, eastern europe, northern italy.
