Document Summary

Census- a study that measures a characteristic of the individuals in a population: a purely observational study, does not involve a sample! Experimental design- a study that measures a characteristic in a sample with controlling the experimental units or the treatment: example: measure the weight gain of three females versus three males on a week long protein diet. Independent design- where all experimental units are chosen randomly and assigned to treatments randomly: dependent design- where one-half of the experimental units are chosen randomly and the second half are chosen by matching some characteristics. Choose type: if you can control the characteristics of the individuals and control the treatment then an experimental study is appropriate. However, if you cannot then an observational study would be better: causation- observational studies cannot be used to determine causation because of the possible presence of lurking variables.
