Document Summary

I was excited to register and spent the entire semester following the presidential race so that i could be well informed when i made my vote for the presidential candidate of my choice. However, to my dismay, i was refused my right to vote because at the time, my family and i lived on the island of puerto rico. Puerto rico was acquired by the united states in 1898 as a result of the spanish-american war and became a commonwealth in 1952. Puerto ricans have been united states citizens since the 1901 voting rights act (vra) and its amendments as well as the jones act of 1917. Due to these acts, puerto ricans have the same rights as all other citizens, except for the right to vote for their president. Today, the right of a puerto rican to vote is a function of residence for any english speaking puerto rican living in a state.
