How is listening important: ex: husband had a work function last night, teacher talked to boss at husband"s company, remembered a lot about boss" children, husband could not believe teacher remembered all that information. Barriers to listening: noise- physical, semantic, psychological (physical ex: tv is on and you can"t really concentrate on what the person is saying. ) (semantic ex: Someone has an accent so you are distracted by it. : message overload- when you are receiving too many messages at once, message complexity- the directions that are difficult to understand (ex: 200 words per minute, but our brains can process up to 800 words per minute. ) Personality is one of the biggest influencers out there on our relationships.
