Document Summary

5. 1 the nature of energy. Thermochemistry is the study of chemical reac;ons and energy changes that involve heat. Energy is the capacity to do work or transfer heat. Work is the energy used to cause an object to move against a force. Heat is the energy used to cause the temperature of an object to increase. Kine5c energy is the energy of mo;on. The magnitude of the kine;c energy, ek, of an object depends on its mass (m) and speed (v). Forms of kine;c energy: a moving car, a rolling ball, a dog running. In chemistry we are interested in the kine;c energy of atoms and molecules. Although they are small, they have mass and are in mo;on. Poten5al energy is the stored energy that arises from the aorac;ons and repulsions an object experiences in rela;on to other objects. Forms of poten;al energy: the energy stored in a spring, a weight held above your head.
