Definition of law: prediction of the way that a court will decide specific legal questions, a rule of civic conduct prescribed by the supreme power in a state, commanding what is right, and prohibiting what is wrong. Functions of law: to maintain stability in the social, political, and economic system through, dispute resolution, protection of property, the preservation of the state while at the same time permitting ordered change. Disputes are : inevitable in a complex society and may involve criminal or non- criminal matter. Protection of property: law that protects ownership of property and allows from agreements (contracts) to exchange property. Preservation of the state: ensures that changes are result of elections, legislation, and referenda rather than resolution, sedition, and rebellion.
