Document Summary

Chapter 17: sexual selection: describe sexual selection and explain how it differs from natural selection. Intersexual selection involves individuals of one sex selecting individuals from the other sex as mates. By definition, females produce fewer, but larger gametes than males, therefore an egg compared to a sperm is much more valuable. Sperm take less energy to produce and are produced in much larger quantities. Because eggs are the limiting resource, males should compete for access to mating opportunities with females. Because the eggs are expensive and rare, females should be the choosier sex. He holds on to her and protects her, and the bigger the better. It works too: satellites: males which kind of look like females and they hang out and wait for the opportune time to swoop in between a mating pair and fertilize the eggs, also ssssswims off. 17. 5 conflicts of interest between males and females: describe the phenomenon of sexual conflict and give examples.
