Document Summary

Microbial nutrition: all life requires, electron flow, to drive all life processes, drives ions into, out of cells, used to create atp, energy, to move electrons, materials to make cell parts, to make cell parts, nutrients- chonps. Lithotrophs: use inorganic molecules as electron donors, organotrophs, use organic molecules as electron donors, ultimate electron acceptor. Ions necessary for protein function: mg2+, ca2+, fe2+, k+ Micronutrients: trace elements, co, cu, zn, etc, growth factors(organic compounds) necessary for enzyme function, carbon. Advantage: less competition for food sources, phototrophs, contain pigments that allow them to use light as an energy source. Nutrient uptake: passive diffusion, some substances freely diffuse through membranes, o2, co2, small molecule, follows gradient of material. Can only travel from area of high concentration to area of low concentration: facilitated diffusion, transporters pass material into/out of cell, follows gradient of material.
