This soluble protein is produced by b cells to interact with antigens. Types of immunity: naturally acquired active immunity: the host produces antibodies and t cells in response to an infection. This type of immunity can last for years or a lifetime. Ex: when you get a cold, you make your own antibodies: naturally acquired passive immunity: the antibodies are passed from one host to another. This type of immunity lasts for a few weeks to months. Ex: a mother passes antibodies to her fetus through the placenta. These antibodies stay in the infant for several months after birth: artificially acquired active immunity: this is the result of a vaccination. The host can now make antibodies that can last for years. It"s artificial because your body couldn"t make them before the shot: artificially acquired passive immunity: the host gets antibodies from another host that has already formed antibodies against the antigen. This type of immunity only lasts a few weeks.
