Sex chromosomes - chromosomes that determine an organisms" sex: humans have 1 pair of sex chromosomes, human females have a pair of x chromosomes (xx, human males have a x chromosome and a y chromosome (xy) Autosomes - all of the other chromosomes besides sex chromosomes: humans have 22 pairs of autosomes. Fertilization - gametes (haploid) unite, forming a zygote (diploid=2n: each gamete has 22 autosomes and 1 sex chromosomes. Purpose: reduces number of chromosome sets from diploid to haploid (since we are reducing)
