Document Summary

Be able to describe natural selection and determine between phenotype and genotype. Fitness : the ability of an individual to pass genes to future generations. Major part is number of offspring and their health which will determine evolution. Has nothing to do with physical health of individual. An individual adapted to the local environment likely produces more offspring compared to an offspring who is not well adapted. Natural selection: tendency of an organism that possess adaptations to their environment to survive and pass genes to next generation through reproduction. Tends to result in the removal of a least fit organism from the population; depends on the environment. Some individuals produce more offspring b/c some survive better than others. Acts on the phenotype that is being expressed. But its effects are fixed only for heritable traits (e. g. genotype) of a population. Genotype- genetic make-up of an organism that may or may not be expressed.
