Quality that distinguishes vital functioning beings from dead ones to inorganic compounds: we define life with a set of characteristics shared by all living organisms. To be alive an organism must: composed of cells, maintain homeostasis, respond to stimuli, use and convert materials and energy, grow, reproduce, evolve. 1mm- complex and organized: living organisms are composed of cells that have a complex, organized structure. The cell is the smallest unit of life: living organisms maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis = to stay the same : enables organisms to cope with changes in their environment, living organisms respond to stimuli.
