The defense mechanisms ward off anxiety through self-deception and the distortion of reality so that the id"s urges will not have to be acknowledged: describe the methods of study, summarize how they conducted their research: Over time, freud had man clinical interactions with his patients. Patients would usually be experiencing some form of anxiety. Mechanisms of defense were discovered in these interactions. Freud would study his patients making them react to certain stimuli in hopes of discovering how they reacted to it.
