ANTH 2423 Chapter : Tradition
Document Summary
Tradition is the sharing of something with cultural significance from group member to group member. Tradition is a vital, dynamic feature of the culture of a folk group. It is often the first word that comes to mind when people think of folklore. Is both lore and the process of communicating the lore: over time the perception of tradition has changes. Tradition is identified as tradition by the community. The idea that traditions are passed down suggests an only linear passing on of traditions. Passing on a sharing can be from young people to young people and then on to older people and the tradition becomes an aspect of another folk group. Instead think of culture as a web with traditions being circulated across the web in many different directions. Native american traditions had to be altered to fit into their relocated lifestyle after being moved.
