Became fascinated by indians at age 9. Taught himself to recreated indian artifacts close to the ones he found near his home. 1879- was working for the smithsonian bureau of ethnology. Sent to look at ancient artifacts and ruins in new mexico and arizona. Expected to live 3 months living in tents outside of the pueblos.
