Document Summary

Objective 1: demonstrate how to navigate the web. Search engine: a program that searches a database for specific words & returns a list of web pages or documents in which the search term was found. Spiders: search engines send these out to crawl the web and gather information. Metasearch engines: search other search engines and aggregate results. Dogpile is a metasearch that pulls from google, yahoo, & several other search engines. Boolean searches: use logical operators--and, or, & not--to link the words you are searching for; should be used in uppercase letters. Using and to join two words results in pages that include both words--so the number of hits is lower. Joining two words with an or means that either word can be present--so the number of hits is larger. Using not is exclusive, which means the results must include the first word but cannot include the second word.
