Document Summary

Oxygen itself is not flammable, but it must be present for combustion to occur. Hydrogen and oxygen have extremely low boiling points. However when the two combine the have extremely different substance results. Free elements are rare on earth most of what we see are compounds. Can have any ratio of hydrogen to oxygen. Must be a 2-1 ratio of hydrogen to oxygen. Ionic bonds- occur between nonmetals and metals (the transfer of an electron) Chemical bonds are interactions between charged particles that compose atoms. Covalent bonds- occur between two or more nonmetals (the sharing of electrons) Metals have a tendency to lose electrons and nonmetals have a tendency to gain. They then become cations and anions accordingly. Electrons are shared between atoms which leads to Atoms with a lower potential energy, which are most stable. 3. 3 representing compounds: chemical formulas and molecular models relative number of atoms or ions of each.
