Society (norms) men supposed to endorse instrumental traits: conclusion, female friendships closer/more intimate, men and women average ~# of friends, but women have partners outside of romantic relationship for support. Study (rubin, 1970): demonstrated by asking men and women, Who would you turn to if you came home one night and your wife/husband/partner/lover announced they were leaving you? . Women readily respond w/ same-sex friend, but few men did. Most men: couldn"t think of anyone to turn to. Lgbt+ friendships romance begins: study (galupo, 2009): surveyed a convenience sample of 1415 ppl from across. Us: most heterosexual men and women: did not have close friend who is. Lgbt+, only 1/6: most lgbt+ ppl did have heterosexual friends, 80, friendships w lgbt+ people: just as rewarding as friendships w heterosexuals, more contact heterosexuals have w lgbt+, more they like them. Self-perception/personality & friendship: relational self-construals: extent to which we think of ourselves as interdependent than independent.
