De ne the nature and function of communication. Managers need communicating skills primarily because: it provides them with the information they need to make a decision; it provides them with the means to let everyone else know a decision has been made. Communication is the transfer of understanding of meaning. This means that if no transfer of information or ideas has been conveyed, communication cannot take place. For communication to be successful, the meaning must be imparted and understood. This does not require the receiver to agree with the point of view of the sender. Interpersonal communication: communication between two or more people. Organisational communication: all patterns, networks and systems of communication within an organisation. Motivation: clarifying to employees what is to be done, how well they are doing, and what they can do to improve their performance. Information: required by individuals in organisations to get things done. Emotional expression: provides a release of emotional expression.
