Mendel"s work was rediscovered in 1900 and compared with darwin"s theory of evolution. Some geneticists thought the two ideas incompatible. Medel treated all genetic traits as discrete (either- or) Darwin considered genetic traits to quantitative (continuous and more subtle variation) Within a few decades, researchers discovered that quantitative characters are influenced by multiple gene loci. Alleles at each locus follow mendelian inheritance. This developed a new field of population genetics in 1908. Study of how populations change over time. The units of evolution are genes (mendel) The mechanism of evolution is selection (darwin) Genetic variation in populations arise by chance through mutation and recombination. Evolution is the changes in allele frequencies between generation. Speciation occurs gradually when populations become genetically isolated. So, to study evolution at the smallest scale we focus on populations. Population- a localized group of organisms of the same species.
