Legacy of romanticism"s passion for freedom played out through 19th-century: struggle for national independence. Greeks against turks, poles against russia, czechs against austria, norway against. As more conscious of national characters, came to prize distinctive artistic heritages more. Characteristic musical feature of movement is incorporation of national folk music into concert pieces, songs, and operas. National themes reinforced by musical themes taken from folk song. Result was music stirred strong emotions at home, often made effective ambassador abroad. Although political nationalism was major factor all over europe, composers in europe are not categorized with musical nationalists since it strove to make local music independent of europe"s traditional cultural leaders. Nationalist composers often deliberately broke traditional rules of harmony, form, etc.
