Onion theory of communication: we all are onions with many layers and as time goes by we begin to peel back our layers. As you begin to reveal your layers, so does your partner. Good communication is one of the most important factors in a satisfying relationship. Couple who know how to communicate are more happier. Relationship goal- maintain the relationship and not hurt or offend the person with our message. Identity management goal- we want our communication to project a certain image of ourselves. Important influence that our family of origin has on our personal development. Family members use language and communication strategies to negotiate, inform, reinforce values and beliefs, etc. If children learn positive ways of communicating, they will develop health strategies of communicating with others. Facial expressions, hand and arm gestures, postures and body positioning. May have a stronger impact when there is a conflict between verbal and nonverbal information.
