Chapter 2: internet and the world wide web. The internet is a worldwide packet-switching network of computers connected by high- speed telephone and other communication links, which allow data to be sent rapidly from one computer to another. Sponsors pay to support the computing and communication needed to maintain a site or server. Sponsors agree to use certain protocols so that communication is ensured. However there is little control over who can use the internet, or what kind of data is carried on it. Computers can communicate because they have an agreement on how to converse. Several important protocols that govern the internet include tcp/ip, http, https, The most important protocol is the transmission control protocol/internet. Protocol (tcp/ip), which is the basic communicating language or protocol of the internet. Ip: responsible for moving packets of data from node to node.
