Steam engines: machines powered by a furnace and a boiler. Trevithick was behind the invention of steam engine, but people believe that james watts (scottish) invented steam engines. When watts was born steam engines had been in commercial operation in england for more than 20 years. * in 17th cent, denis papin devised a form of a steam pressure engine using a cylinder and a piston. But the problem was with harnessing steam to drive machinery. Boilers and cylinders and all essential parts would have to be not only airtight and watertight but also immensely strong (steam would be generated under pressure/ it is dangerous to work with steam engines) *thomas savery: attempted to harness the power of steam. He designed pumping engine, which incorporate two different ways of utilizing steam to generate power. (e had (cid:498)catch-all patent(cid:499), which means anyone else devising a steam powdered pumping engine should negotiate terms with him first.
