Document Summary
4. 1. 6 lab: investigate estimating population size wet lab. Ecologists often monitor the populations of plants and animals to better understand the health of an ecosystem. In fact, when they are concerned about the health or stability of a certain area, population studies of some of the key species are often one of the first steps to be taken. Given an infinite amount of resources and no predators, a population will always grow. In the real world, however, these conditions rarely exist (if ever), and populations grow and decline in predictable patterns. In this lab, you will use a technique for capturing, marking, and recapturing small invertebrates such as insects, snails, or pill bugs that live in your local area. Then you will run a capture-and-recapture simulation and perform some calculations to determine the accuracy of capture-and-recapture studies of population size.
