APPH 1040 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: One-Repetition Maximum, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Impaired Glucose Tolerance
Document Summary
Physical activity: all body movements that use muscles that results in an increase of energy expenditure and enhances health. Exercise: planned structured and repetitive bodily movement done to improve/maintain physical fitness. All exercise is physical activity but not all physical activity is exercise. Physical activity plays a huge role in preventing chronic disease. Aerobic exercise improves blood flow and eases performance of everyday tasks. Strengthens heart muscle and increases number of capillaries. Regular physical activity can reduce high blood pressure, increases hdl. Reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity reduces risk of metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, low hdl, high triglycerides, impaired glucose tolerance) Cancer can be avoided by healthier lifestyle and environmental choices. 1/3 of cancers could be prevented by being physically active and eating well. Weight-bearing and strength-building physical activities are recommended to maintain bone health. Physical activity elevates metabolic rate for hours after physical activity.
