Under roosevelt, the federal government developed programs to assist unemployed workers and their families. Social security act of 1935: federal act that created social security, unemployment compensation, and aid to mothers with dependent children. State: a government that claims the right to rule a given territory and its population and to have a monopoly of force in that territory. Nation: a people with shared economic and cultural interests. Nation state: combines the governmental and cultural connotations of the two words.
