Anxiety: a general feeling of apprehension about possible future danger. Fear: an alarm reaction that occurs in response to immediate danger. Anxiety disorders: a group of disorders that the dsm has identi ed that share symptoms of clinically signi cant anxiety or fear. A ect ~29% of people at some point in their lives. Most common category of disorders for women, 2nd most common for men. Anxiety disorders have the earliest age of onset of all mental disorders and are associated w/ an increased prevalence of a number of medical conditions. Historically, anxiety disorders were classi ed w/ neurotic disorders. Neurotic disorders: show maladaptive and self-defeating behaviors, they are not incoherent, dangerous, or out of touch w/ reality. Freud"s formulation: anxiety was produced when there was an inner battle between some primitive desire (id) and prohibitions against its expression (from the ego and superego)
