CJE-3065 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Absenteeism, Stereotype
Document Summary
Being native in contemporary us society offers us indians both comfort and conflict. Rich cultural heritages continue to shape our worldviews, customs, and values in an often hostile and complex world that demands conformity in thought, action, and deed. Despite repetitive efforts by the newcomers to strip us of our customary lifeways, our ancestors found means to maintain their political and social identity. First, while in the service in vietnam, one of my shipmates kept using the word kook in my presence- anyone not white. Second, while in college, one of my history professors asked me if my people were like other indians- drinking and all. Third, the owner of a business spewed racist venom. Her promotion of genocide as a solution to a mere act of absenteeism reflects a deep seated hatred of indians. Fourthly, when my son came home from kindergarten and asked why the indians always lost. Watching hollywood movies can be an exasperating experience.
