The ancient romans believed that the father was endowed with the power of patriae potestas- the fathers had the right to sell, kill, or allow their progeny to coninue to live. Why were children treated in such ways: first, life expectancy was very short. The majority of infants died during the irst year of life. Therefore emoional atachments to newborns were avoided as a defense mechanism: second, families simply could not bear the burden of feeding and caring for another member. Female ofspring would need a dowry to ind a husband: children who survived the irst few years of life were litle adults , there was no status of childhood, they received no formal educaion. Schooling oten entailed being sold into appreniceship in order to bring money to the family and provide skill for the child. This situaion persisted into the industrial revoluion: the ideniicaion of childhood began to emerge slowly, infant mortality diminished.
