Local legal culture: norms which center on how cases should be handled and how a participant should behave in the judicial process: norms influences courts in three ways: Help participants distinguish between our court and others. Tell members of a court community how the should treat one another. Going rate: appropriate sentence for the offense bases on prior records/case characteristics. Continuance: adjournment of a scheduled case until a later date. The courtroom workgroup: decisions rely on how participants interact, better understand how officials function if we view them in workgroups: groups of people who interact with each other, share certain goals/values, and form relationships. Difference among workgroups based on influence of factors. Ex: constant rotation of judges means attorneys must constantly adapt leading to more formal interactions and less routine.
