Document Summary

Chapter 8: the skeletal system- the appendicular skeleton. Every other group of bone not included in the axial skeleton. It includes bones of the upper and lower free limbs (not attached to the axial skeleton) Girdles attach the limbs to the axial skeleton. 32 bones divided into 2 distinct regions: pectoral girdle (chest/breast): formed by the scapula and the clavicle free upper limb: the humerus (bone of the arm), radius, and ulna (bones of the forearm), bones of the hand. Articulate with each other at 3 joints: shoulder joint, elbow joint, and wrist joint. Between the elbow and the wrist joint: radius and ulna. Scapula does not articulate with the ribs and vertebrae. Large groups of muscles that extend from vertebral column and ribs anchor the scapula in place. Pectoral girdle articulates with the axial skeleton: sternoclavicular joint (articulation between sternum and clavicle) The only point where axial and appendicular articulate with each other.
