In most contexts -- impossible, impractical, unnecessary: probability samples, representative sample: one where we can draw accurate, unbiased estimates of the characteristics of the larger population, error of estimation. Sampling error: characteristics of individuals selected for the sample differ somewhat from characteristics of the general population. Probability sample: sample for which the researcher knows the mathematical probability that any individual in the population is included in the sample. Simple random sampling: every possible sample of desired size has same chance of being selected from population; every individual has equal chance. Sampling frame: list of population from which sample will be drawn. Sampling frame of all in pop: table of random numbers, random digit dialing: selecting random sample for telephone surveys. Systematic sampling: taking every so many individual for a sample. Stratified random sampling: first divide pop into strata, then randomly sample from each strata: proportionate sampling method: cases sampled from each stratum in proportion to their prevalence in the population.
