Chapter 13 Nondominant Seventh Chords
Important Concepts
- Nondominant Seventh Chords
- Diatonic seventh chords that do not possess dominant function
- Only dominant and leading-tone seventh are considered to have
dominant function
- All others are nondominant
- Nondominant seventh chords will most often appear as major-major (MM),
minor-minor (mm) and diminished-minor (dm) seventh chords
- Roman Numeral Symbols
- Represented with superscript 7 to the Roman numeral triad symbol
- MM and mm seventh chords don’t need any other additional
symbols
- Dm chords need the half-diminished symbol (Ø)
- MM: I7, IV7, III7, VI7
- mm: i7,ii7, iii7, iv7, vi7
- dm: ii^Ø7, vii^Ø7
- Seventh Chords in Major and Minor Keys

- Some of the chords don’t use only one form of the minor scale
- Mediant seventh chord (III7) is derived from the natural minor scale
