Document Summary

Although the genre has grown tremendously in a number of ways, the reality is commercially promoted hip hop has become a playground for caricatures of black gangstas, pimps and hoes. Hyper-sexism is at an all-time high and homophobia along with distorted, antisocial, self-destructive and violent portraits of masculinity. These negative images were not always hip hop"s reputation. Even gangsta rap was a much more complex artform with elements of parties, political agendas, black power etc. The gangsta and the hustler were not invented by record companies, they used to be complex figures. The hip hop industry is currently suffering a dumbing down. many believe this is due to hip hop"s growing popularity thanks to a massive interest from white fans. 85% of all hip hop fans are white. This trend however does not describe all commercial rap and fans. The problems of hip hop are not caused by individual rappers alone.
