PSY 201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Parietal Lobe, Basal Ganglia, Zygote
Document Summary
Nervous system - network of cells in the brain and body. Three functions: receive sensory input from the world through the senses, process information in the brain by focusing on it, responding to the information by actively reacting to it. Central nervous system - processes information in the brain and the spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system - processes information in the soft organs. Two major parts: somatic nervous system, associated with skeletal muscle voluntary control of body movements, autonomic nervous system, responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, think automatic responses. Neurons - basic units of the nervous system, known as nerve cells. Dendrites - short branched extension of a nerve cell that detect signals from neighboring neurons. Cell body - area where information from other neurons are collected and integrated. Axon - place where electrical impulses are transmitted.
