YDP-3400 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Life Skills, Developmental Psychology, Goal Setting
The Reality of Implementing Community… - Forneris et al.
• Increasing focus on PYD
o Understanding that a “lack of significant negative or compromising behaviors is
not equal to optimal development”
o “one mechanism that has been identified for enhancing the developmental
outcomes of underserved youth is programming that uses a PYD framework”
• Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR Model)
o Respecting the rights and feelings of others - ability to control one’s behavior and
conduct
o Effort and cooperation – participant’s ability to apply themselves to a given task
and to work with others in the program
o Self-direction – the ability to improve in a chosen area using goal setting and
planned practice
o Helping others and leadership – ability to direct a group towards a goal
o Transference outside the gym/program – use the skills outlined above outside of
the contexts of the program
o Program begins with relational time, then awareness time, ends with reflecting
and rating
• Life Skills
o Life skills = abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to
deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life
o Or – skills that help them succeed in the environments that they are in like home,
school & neighborhoods
o Teaching kids’ life skills in context with physical activities – SUPER
• Implementing Community-Based PYD Programming
o Problems in addressing youths’ problems on a daily instead of long-term basis
▪ Creating and sustaining youths’ motivation
▪ Addressing youths’ violations of rules and expectations
▪ Consistency in program leaders’ professionalism
▪ Dealing with youths’ personalities
▪ Adapting top down policies
▪ Addressing tensions between the program and youths’ outside lives
▪ Mediating youths’ relationships with community members and institutions
o When problems arise in youth programs, most appropriate and effective solutions
raised by program practitioners were youth-centered
o When addressing problems – an open dialogue of challenges faced by front line
staff is needed
• Refugee Sport Club
o Goal = improved physical, psychosocial, and socio-emotional development for
young participants
o Adult leaders build relationships with participants to empower young refugees
within RSC and in their own lives
