Chapter 12 - Eating Disorders
Anorexia nervosa - starve themselves for long periods of time yet remain convinced they need
to lose more weight.
● Significantly low body weight
● Low weight can cause amenorrhea - a stop in menstrual cycles
● They have a distorted image of their body
● Fear of gaining weight
● Fatigued
● Exercise all the time. Strict schedule
● They have elaborate rituals around food
○ Restricting type → refusing to eat and or engaging in exercise to prevent weight
gain
○ binge/purge type → engage in binge eating or purging behaviors. Different from
bulimia nervosa because people with BN are typically overweight or normal
weight. Will purge food even when eating small amounts
● Low weight can be determined by BMI
● White people more likely
Bulimia Nervosa - uncontrolled eating, or bingeing, followed by behaviors designed to prevent
weight gain from the binges.
● 1-3 episodes per week (mild)
● Feel compelled to eat even though not hungry
● Involves an amount of food larger than the average person would eat in one sitting
● Behaviors to control weight:
○ Self induced vomitting, laxatives, diuretics, other purging medications, fasting,
excessive exercise
● They do not tend to show gross distortions in their body image like in people with
anorexia
● But they still are dissatisfied with their shape
● More common in whites
Binge-eating Disorder - a mental disorder. resembles bulimia nervosa except that a person
with BED does not regularly engage in purging, fasting or excessive exercise to compensate for
binges.
● They eat continuously throughout the day
● Eat very rapidly and appear to be in a daze when eating
● Overweight
● Disgusted with their body
Obesity is common among people with binge-eating disorder. It is defined as a body mass
index of over 30
