Chapter 7 - Suicide
Among 3 leading causes of death worldwide ages 15-44. The risk of suicide is increased in
people with any mental disorder.
Definition - death from injury, poisoning, or suffocation where there is evidence that the injury
was self-inflicted and that the decedent intended to kill him/herself.
Completed suicide - end in death
Suicide attempts - may or may not end in death
Suicidal ideation - the thought of suicide
Clinicians are encouraged to attend to suicide risk early and often in treatment.
Gender
More women than men attempt suicide but men are more likely to complete it. This is true
across all age groups. Men tend to choose more lethal methods
Men - firearm. Women - poison.
Ethnic and Cross-Cultural Differences
European americans have higher suicide rates than all other groups. Native americans close
behind.
High rates of suicide in Europe and china, lower rates in latin and south america.
Suicide in Children and Adolescents
More common in adolescents than children because psychopathology tied to suicide like
depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. increase in adolescence.
Older people more likely than younger people to be successful in suicide. May do this because
they cannot suffer the loss of a loved one or an illness they are experience is too much to bare.
NSSI - nonsuicidal self injury - cutting, burning, puncturing their skin with no intent on dying.
Occurs across mood and anxiety disorders
3 types of suicide:
1. Egoistic - committed by people who feel alienated from others, empty of social contacts
and alone in an unsupportive world
2. Anomic - committed by people who experience severe disorientation because of a major
change in their relationship to society
3. Altruistic - committed by people who believe that taking their life will benefit society
Suicide can be due to: loss of a loved one, sexual/physical abuse, economic hardship (loss of
job) , illness.
Suicide cluster - when 2+ suicides or attempted suicides are non-randomly bunched together
in space or time, such as a series of suicide attempts in the same high school
Suicide contagion - phenomenon in which the suicide of a well-known person is linked to the
acceptance of suicide by people who closely identify with that person
