Cluster A - odd/eccentric behaviors
Similar to those with schizophrenia but retain their grasp on reality to a greater degree.
Paranoid, speak in odd/eccentric ways, have unusual beliefs or perceptual experiences
Paranoid PD - distrust and suspiciousness in others. Preoccupied with concerns of being
victimized. Misinterpret situations in line with their suspicions.
Schizoid PD - detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotional
expression in their interactions with others. Indifferent to opportunities to develop close
relationships and derive little pleasure from family or social interactions. Low positive
emotions. “Loners”, “bland”, “uninteresting”
Schizotypal PD - symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia but in a milder form.
Socially isolated, restricted range of emotions and uncomfortable in interpersonal
interactions.
How to distinguish between the others? The cognitive and perceptual distortions and odd and
eccentric behaviors. Odd beliefs and magical thinking. Tend to believe that random events or
circumstances have a particular meaning just for them. Illusions short of hallucinations. Odd
speech. Males > females.
Cluster B - dramatic/emotional
Dramatic and impulsive behaviors, show little regard for their own safety or the safety of others.
May act in hostile/violent ways towards others. Lack of concern for others.
Borderline PD - hypersensitivity to abandonment and rejection. Unstable self concept.
Periods of extreme self doubt and periods of grandiosity. A need for others to support
their self esteem. Unstable interpersonal relationships. They can switch from idealizing
others to despising them. Unstable moods. May engage in self damaging behaviors.
Negative things.
Treatment - dialectical behavior therapy (gain a more realistic and positive sense
of self), transference-focused therapy (more realistic and healthier understanding
of themselves and relationships), and mentalization-based treatment (helps
patients appreciate alternatives
Histrionic PD - behave in ways that draw attention to themselves. Wants flattering
nurturance and preferential attention. Pursue attention from others by being highly
dramatic, overly seductive and emphasizing the positive qualities of their physical
appearance. Self centered and shallow
Narcissistic PD - people who think they are better than everyone else and should get
their way all the time. Will walk all over others to accomplish their goals. They see
