Document Summary

Advantages of using bacteria and viruses for genetic studies. Don"t have to worry about traits being hidden by others. Minimal media: contains minimum nutrients needed for growth of wild- type bacteria. Selective media: between minimal media + complete media. Has some inorganic molecules and some organic molecule. Prototroph: can synthesize all compounds on its own. Auxotroph: cant synthesize all compounds on its own. Lack one or more enzymes necessary for synthesis of compounds. This is done when the colonies get too big to count. Allows one to calculate the number in original colony. Prokaryotes = use homologous recombination to try to incorporate new info into genome. The old copy of the gene is replaced by the newer copy that was taken up by the cell. Dna exchange and reproduction do not go hand in hand in prokaryotic. Horizontal gene transfer: genetic information transferred between unrelated cells. Vertical gene transfer = between parent and offspring.
