Most effective when those subject to this form of power are aware of expectations/warned in advance about penalties for failure to comply. Failure to execute threats can produce cycle of neg. behav: reward power: rests on ability to deliv. something of value to oth. Tangible/intangible (lim. use of tangible rewards: legitimate power. Ppl w/legit power have right to prescribe behav. w/in specified parameters: expert power: based on person > position. Experts supply needed info/skills: referent power: role model power.
